El Loco – Surry Hills

We always pass by El Loco on the bus to Central from uni but never had the chance to try it. After uni one day, we wanted to grab lunch. So we did a quick search of any cheap eats in Surry Hills and El Loco popped up as one of the top 10 on the list. Boom. Well there’s our chance to try it out. There were two entrances to El Loco – the main entrance (obviously) was located off the main street and a side entrance through Excelsior Hotel. Being a fan of interior design, I loved the dΓ©cor at El Loco. It was very colourful with prints and cutouts on the walls and large thongs hung off the ceiling while funky music blasted through the sound system. They were also very creative. Instead of using the boringΒ numbered table signs, they had really cute hand painted cactus ones!

After studying the menu, we decided to order the secret taco, camaron taco and corn chips with guacamole and salsa. All the tacos on their menu were $5! Win.

Secret Taco ($5)

What? A SECRET TACO? Say whaat. I was just too adventurous to turn down this fun little mystery. Actually, when it arrived, I had no idea what was in it (and I still kind of don’t). But it was very flavoursome and satisfying and I doubt you could really go wrong with ordering the Secret Taco and putting the decision in the hands of the chefs. I believe this one contained beef, corn, lettuce, beans and a nice sauce that was mildly spicy – don’t worry, I don’t take spicy and it was great anyway.

Camaron taco – Prawn with salsa verde and pico de gallo ($5)

The Camaron taco surprised me with a good serving of nicely caramelised prawns hiddenΒ at the bottom of the taco. It was a nice combination of sauce, vegetables and prawns and it was quickly devoured by us. Eating these tacos was a mess (a small puddle of caramelised sauce was left behind in the paper bowl and we were left with sticky hands)Β and required some skills which we obviously lack. I have to say that I was a bit disappointed with the soft taco shells as I was looking forward to the crunch from the crisp hard shells but this was later satisfied by the nicely toasted corn chips.

These salty corn chips were nicely toasted and was still warm when it was delivered to our table. Combine that with the chilled guacamole and salsa sauce – BAM – a match made in heaven. Loved it. Would definitely order it again next time.

Verdict?

Loved El Loco and we would definitely come back to try something else – like the massive hot dog that was next to our tacos when the waitress was delivering it to us. It was also cheap which is always a plus for uni students like us πŸ™‚
