“Ramen is life”
I’ve walked past Yasaka Ramen many times whilst in the city, wanting to go in on several occasions. It had appealed to me as an intimate ramen-focused restaurant that would produce quality ramen. Was I right? YES I WAS!
I ordered the Yasaka Ramen (cause why would I not order the one with the same name as the restaurant?) with Tonkotsu Miso (the other choices were Tonkotsu Shoyu [pork bone broth with soy] and Tonkotsu Shio [pork bone broth with salt]). Miso was definitely a heavier option, with shio being the lightest one. Because this broth is made so thick, you’re able to tell the waiter/waitress for a lighter soup, in which they dilute it with more water.
I had the full broth version because it was my first time trying it. It was amazingly rich, deep in pork flavour and a bit bitter with the miso which was lovely. The pork slices were melt in your mouth good. The ramen was thick, just the way I like it, and chewy, just the way I like it too.
On the side, we decided to try the Takoyaki, as it looked scrumptious on the menu. We opted for the Negi Ponzu Mayo Takoyaki with their special mayo and sprinkle of spring onions on top. The takoyaki itself is massive and really soft and gooey (almost too soft and gooey for me?) inside with plenty of octopus. On a previous ocassion we also tried Teritama, which was takoyaki topped with teriyaki sauce and egg. It was quite special because the sauce was almost like a creamy egg salad on top and worked really well with the takoyaki. On the other hand, the spring onions didn’t really add anything special, which would’ve made the original version very satisfactory.
At Yasaka Ramen, their motto is ‘Ramen is life’, written on the back of their uniforms. I would highly recommend any of their ramen bowls to try but if ‘thick’ ramen isn’t your thing, ask for the soup to be lighter, which will make it perfect 🙂
Ambience: 8/10 (It may seem like a really small restaurant on ground level, but turns out they have an extra room upstairs for dining!)
Value: The menu items were decently priced and quite good value for money
